I don’t often post a lot of scripture references in my feeds. I refer to scripture a lot but I don’t ever site where it came from, for a couple reasons… first because though I do think that memorizing scripture is important, I don’t think that is for any reason other than applying it to our lives and encouraging others. Not to look more knowledgeable or to make others look less than ourselves. Your knowledge of scripture should be event in the way you live life and the way you encourage others.
That being said, I came across something in my study this morning that I want to share because it needs to be heard.
I’m going to quote from the ESV because I think the language of king James might mix up some of my less seasoned Christian brothers and sisters. This is about half way through the book of James…
“Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.”
Is any body hearing this?
What you allow to come out of your mouth directs the pathway of your life. To say it differently: If you always find yourself talking badly about people, situations, events, circumstances, yourself… that IS going to be the story of your life. Sound miserable? If you are the Capitan of your ship then take hold of your words and change the direction of your life! For some this will be easier than others. Speech is habit, negativity is as routine as coffee in the morning, breathing and wearing clothing in public… It’s just what you do and so it is who you are. But I’m inviting you to be aware of your own negativity.
Hear me on this, I’m not preaching to you what I read, I am teaching you what I have learned and confirmed in scripture.
I have a MAJOR problem with this!
Negativity was my “go to”, not just about the pill life had given me to swallow but the jealousy I felt and the self loathing I had become accustomed to. I would constantly rip myself and others apart (if I did that to you at some point I apologize… I’m a work in progress)
Do you feel trapped inside of negativity? That’s how I felt. In constant competition with everyone and everything around me because my identity was found in my struggle and trial not in victory and liberty.
Book of John:
“The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of the evil treasures produces evil, FOR OUT OF THE ABUNDANCE OF YOUR HEART THE MOUTH SPEAKS.”
What does your mouth say? Do we have patience with our children? With other cultures? With ourselves? Do we rejoice in the gifts others receive or do we mock them and poke holes at their blessings? Do we allow ourselves to be gracious and beautiful or do we criticize ourselves to the point we only wear black and hiding behind a shopping cart, constantly needing to feel blessed by obtaining things we don’t have instead or recognizing the blessings we were born with.
Change the words out cho mouth, change your life.
EVERY TIME something nice pops in your head, SAY IT OUT LOUD.
Sometimes much needed change happens best when we don’t just stop doing something but we start doing something else.
